What Is a Large Language Model and How Does It Work?
How large language models work in plain English, from tokens and training to next-word prediction, with a simple diagram and no math.
Further training a pre-trained AI model on a smaller, specific dataset so it performs better on a particular task or style.
Training a large model from scratch requires vast data and computing resources. Fine-tuning starts from a model that already understands general patterns and adapts it with a focused dataset, which is much cheaper and faster.
For example, a company might fine-tune a language model on thousands of its past customer support conversations so it responds in the company's tone and follows its policies. Techniques such as LoRA (low-rank adaptation) update only a small number of extra parameters, reducing cost further. Fine-tuning is not always the best choice. For questions that depend on frequently changing information, retrieval-augmented generation is often simpler, and careful prompt engineering can solve many problems without any additional training.
Giving a language model a handful of worked examples inside the prompt so it can follow the same pattern for a new input.
Foundation ModelA large AI model trained on broad data that can be adapted to many tasks, such as writing, coding, or image analysis.
Knowledge DistillationA training technique in which a smaller student model learns to imitate a larger teacher model, keeping much of its skill at lower cost.
Reinforcement Learning from Human FeedbackA training method, known as RLHF, that improves an AI model by rewarding responses people rate as more helpful, accurate, or safe.
Zero-Shot LearningThe ability of an AI model to perform a task or recognize categories it was not explicitly trained on, without any examples.
