Git, explained

Git was created by Linus Torvalds in 2005 to manage development of the Linux kernel. Every developer has a full copy of the project history on their own machine, so they can work offline, experiment on branches, and merge changes later.

Core commands include git clone to copy a repository, git commit to save a snapshot of changes, git branch to start a separate line of work, git merge to combine branches, and git push and git pull to sync with a shared remote. Hosting platforms such as GitHub, GitLab, and Bitbucket add pull requests, code review, issue tracking, and CI/CD integrations on top of Git. Learning Git is considered a basic skill for most software roles.
