What is Web Accessibility?

Quick answer

Designing and building websites so people with disabilities, including visual, hearing, motor, and cognitive impairments, can use them.

Web Accessibility, explained

Web accessibility ensures that everyone can perceive, understand, navigate, and interact with online content. The main international guideline is the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines, or WCAG, published by the World Wide Web Consortium. Version 2.2 was released in October 2023. Many laws, such as the European Accessibility Act, reference these guidelines.

Practical steps include adding descriptive alternative text to images, providing captions for videos, ensuring enough colour contrast, making every function usable with a keyboard, labelling form fields clearly, and using proper heading structure so screen readers can navigate. For example, a clinic's online booking form should let a blind patient using a screen reader select a date and confirm an appointment. Accessible design also helps older users, people on small screens, and anyone in difficult conditions such as bright sunlight.
