Roblox Parental Controls: Safety Settings Every Parent Should Know
How to link a parent account on Roblox, set chat and spending limits, use age checks and maturity labels, and spot the warning signs of grooming.
Link your own parent account to your child's Roblox account, then use Parental Controls to set the content maturity level, turn chat off or limit it to trusted friends, set a monthly spending limit with alerts, and add a daily screen time limit. Roblox now requires an age check before chat, and parents can manage key settings until age 16.

Your kid wants to play Roblox because everyone at school does. You want to say yes, but you’ve heard about strangers in chat, surprise Robux charges and games that aren’t meant for 8-year-olds. The good news is that Roblox’s controls changed a lot in the last year, and most of the important settings now sit in one place you manage from your own phone.
This guide covers how to link a parent account, the settings that matter most (chat, spending, content and screen time), how the new age checks and age-based accounts work, and the warning signs of grooming that no setting can fully block.
How Roblox safety works in 2026
Three big changes reshaped Roblox safety, and they matter for how you set things up:
- Age checks for chat. Roblox began requiring an age check to use chat in Australia, New Zealand and the Netherlands in December 2025, then rolled the requirement out worldwide starting January 7, 2026. Without a completed check, chat stays off.
- Age-based chat groups. After the check, users are placed in age groups (under 9, 9–12, 13–15, 16–17, 18–20 and 21+). By default, people can chat only with their own group and the groups directly above and below. Roblox says this design is meant to keep children under 16 from chatting with adults they don’t know.
- Roblox Kids and Roblox Select accounts. Announced in April 2026 and available worldwide since June, Roblox Kids accounts are for ages 5 to 8 and Roblox Select accounts are for ages 9 to 15. Kids accounts only reach games rated Minimal or Mild and have chat off by default. Select accounts reach games rated up to Moderate. Users move to Select at 9 and to a standard account at 16.
The age check itself uses facial age estimation through the device camera, processed by a vendor called Persona. Roblox says images and video are deleted right after processing. Users 13 and older can verify with ID instead. If the estimate is wrong, a parent can correct the child’s age through Parental Controls.
Key takeaway: Platform defaults are much stronger than they were, but they’re built around your child’s age. If your child signed up with a fake birthday, every protection is set for the wrong age. Fixing the birthday is step 1.
Step 1: Link your parent account
Most settings now live in your own account, so you don’t need your child’s phone to change them.
- Create your own Roblox account if you don’t have one.
- On your child’s account, go to Settings > Parental Controls and add a parent, or accept an email invitation sent from your child’s account.
- Verify your age. Roblox asks parents to confirm they’re adults with a government-issued ID or a credit card.
- Agree to link the accounts. You can now change settings from Roblox.com or the Roblox app on iPhone or Android.
In most regions, parents can manage all settings until a child turns 13. Game blocking and direct chat controls stay manageable through age 15. After 16, the account becomes a standard account, so the conversations you have before then matter.
Step 2: Set chat limits
Chat is where most risk lives, so start here. Roblox splits communication into a few separate switches:
- Experience chat: the public text chat inside a game. You can turn it on or off.
- Direct chat: private messages outside a game. You can turn it on or off.
- Chat with friends: for ages 9 to 12, this is limited to trusted friends. Teens 13 to 15 can be set to trusted friends, all friends or no one.
- Voice chat: where available, it’s off by default for under-13s. Parents can turn it off for teens too.
For children under 9, chat stays off unless a parent gives consent after the age check. For under-13s, a “trusted friend” connection needs parent approval. Roblox also says it blocks attempts to share personal information between users who aren’t trusted connections and has never allowed image sharing in chat.
A sensible default: chat off for under-9s, trusted friends only for 9 to 12, and trusted friends only for younger teens until you’ve seen how they handle it.
Step 3: Control spending
Robux purchases add up fast, especially when a game sells upgrades every few minutes. In Parental Controls you can:
- Set a monthly spending limit that covers Robux and subscriptions. It resets every month and unused amounts don’t roll over. Gift card redemptions are not counted against it.
- Choose spending notifications: every transaction, high-spend alerts only (on by default) or none.
- Control trading and Robux transfers for older users with paid plans. Younger users need parent approval for each transfer.
Also lock down the app store side. On iPhone, turn on Ask to Buy through Family Sharing. On Android, require purchase approval in Google Family Link. That way a Roblox limit and a phone-level approval both have to be passed. Our guide on how to set up parental controls walks through both phones.
Step 4: Set content and screen time limits
Roblox replaced age ratings with 4 content maturity labels: Minimal, Mild, Moderate and Restricted. In Parental Controls you set the highest level your child can join with a slider.
| Setting | Where it lives | Suggested starting point |
|---|---|---|
| Content maturity | Parental Controls > content slider | Minimal or Mild under 9, up to Moderate for 9 to 15 |
| Block specific games | Parental Controls > game management | Block any game you’ve reviewed and don’t like |
| Approve specific games | Parent approval requests | Approve requests one game at a time |
| Sensitive issues games | Toggle in Parental Controls | Off for under-13s (the default) |
| Experience chat | Parental Controls > communication | Off under 9, on for older kids if you’re comfortable |
| Direct chat | Parental Controls > communication | Off or trusted friends only |
| Voice chat | Parental Controls > communication | Off under 13 (the default) |
| Monthly spending limit | Parental Controls > spending | A fixed amount you’re happy to lose |
| Spending alerts | Parental Controls > spending | All transactions |
| Daily screen time | Parental Controls > screen time | Fits your family rules |
The daily screen time limit applies to Kids accounts and Select users ages 9 to 12. When the limit is hit, Roblox locks until the next day. For teens, Roblox suggests a conversation instead, though phone-level tools like Screen Time and Family Link still work.
Warning signs of grooming on Roblox
Settings reduce contact with strangers, but they can’t stop every bad actor, and a teen who gets around an age check can end up in the wrong chat group. Grooming tends to follow a pattern. The National Center for Missing & Exploited Children (NCMEC) describes offenders building rapport through compliments and shared interests, offering gifts or incentives, and relying on secrecy.
On Roblox, that can look like:
- Free Robux, items or game passes offered by someone your child met online.
- Requests to move the chat to another app with fewer controls.
- Secrecy: your child closes the screen or switches apps when you walk in.
- An older “friend” who seems to know a lot about your child’s life, school or family.
- Requests for photos, personal details or a phone number, even if they seem harmless.
- Changes in mood, withdrawal or unusual upset when gaming is limited.
Any one sign alone doesn’t prove something is wrong, but a cluster deserves a calm conversation. Some offenders use the trust they build to demand images and then threaten the child. That crime, sextortion, is covered in detail in our guide to sextortion scams targeting teens.
What to do if something feels wrong
- Stay calm. Kids stop telling parents things when they expect anger or a ban.
- Save evidence. Take screenshots of usernames, messages and dates before blocking anyone.
- Report and block in Roblox. Use Report Abuse on the user’s profile or in the game, then block them from Parental Controls.
- Report exploitation to NCMEC. If an adult asked for images, sent sexual content or arranged to meet, report it to the CyberTipline at report.cybertip.org or 1-800-843-5678.
- Call police if your child is in immediate danger or someone is threatening them.
If your child was tricked into sharing an account password, change it, then turn on 2-step verification. Our guides to two-factor authentication and social engineering explain why these tricks work on adults too.
Where to start this weekend
Here’s a 30-minute setup plan:
- Sit down with your child and open Roblox together. Explain that you’re setting it up so they can keep playing.
- Check the birthday on their account and correct it if it’s wrong.
- Create your parent account, verify your age and link the accounts.
- Set chat, content maturity, spending limits and alerts using the table above.
- Add phone-level purchase approval and screen time limits.
- Agree on 3 family rules: no sharing personal info, no moving chats to other apps, and tell a parent if anyone offers free Robux or asks for photos.
- Put a reminder in your calendar to review settings every 3 months.
If Roblox is part of your child’s first phone setup, our guide to a first phone for a kid covers the wider device rules.
The bottom line
Roblox’s 2026 controls are among the most detailed in kids’ gaming: age-checked chat, age-based accounts, spending caps and remote parent management. They work best when your child’s age is set correctly, you manage settings from your own linked account, and your child knows they can come to you without losing the game forever. Settings handle the defaults. Conversations handle everything else.

Frequently asked questions
Is Roblox safe for a 7-year-old?
Roblox can be reasonably safe for a 7-year-old with the right setup. Children ages 5 to 8 now get a Roblox Kids account, which limits games to Minimal or Mild content and keeps chat off by default. Link your parent account, keep chat off, set a spending limit and play together at first so you can see which games they choose.
How do I put parental controls on my child's Roblox account?
Create your own Roblox account, then add yourself as a parent from your child's Settings > Parental Controls or through an email invite. Verify your age with ID or a credit card and accept the link. After that, you can change chat, spending, content and screen time settings from your own phone or computer.
Can I turn off chat on Roblox completely?
Yes. In Parental Controls you can switch off experience chat, direct chat and voice chat separately. Children under 9 have chat off unless a parent consents, and anyone without a completed age check can't use chat at all. Turning chat off still lets your child play games, though some games are less fun without team chat.
How do I stop my kid from spending money on Roblox?
Set a monthly spending limit in Parental Controls and turn on notifications for every transaction. Then add purchase approval at the phone level with Ask to Buy on iPhone or Family Link on Android. Gift card redemptions don't count against Roblox's limit, so talk to relatives about gift cards too.
What is the Roblox age check and is it safe?
The age check estimates age from a short face scan through the device camera, or, for users 13 and older, an ID. Roblox says its vendor, Persona, deletes images and video immediately after processing. The check is optional, but chat stays locked without it. If the result is wrong, parents can correct the age in Parental Controls.
Until what age can parents control a Roblox account?
In most regions, parents can manage all settings until a child turns 13, and some controls such as game blocking and direct chat management continue through age 15. At 16, a Roblox Select account becomes a standard account. Use the teen years to shift from strict settings to agreed rules and regular check-ins.
What are the signs someone is grooming my child on Roblox?
Watch for someone offering free Robux or items, asking to move the chat to another app, requesting photos or personal details, or asking your child to keep secrets. Sudden secrecy about gaming, mood changes or gifts from unknown people are also red flags. Save evidence, report the user and contact NCMEC's CyberTipline if an adult is involved.
