Sent Money to the Wrong Person? How to Try to Get It Back
App-by-app steps for Zelle, Venmo, Cash App, PayPal, Apple Cash and wires when you send money to the wrong person, plus realistic odds of recovery.
Act within minutes. If the payment still shows as pending or unclaimed, cancel it in the app. If it has completed, politely ask the recipient to send it back, then contact the app or your bank with the transaction details. Completed P2P payments usually can't be reversed by the company, so the recipient's cooperation matters most.

One wrong digit in a phone number, one tap on the wrong “Chris” in your contacts, and your money is gone to a stranger. It’s one of the most common payment app mistakes, and the stomach drop that follows is real.
Here’s the honest picture. Whether you get the money back depends mostly on 2 things: whether the payment has been claimed yet, and whether the person who received it is willing to return it. This guide gives you the steps for each major app, what banks and payment companies can and can’t do, and how to avoid a scam that looks exactly like an innocent mistake.
First 10 minutes: what to do right now
Speed matters more than anything else. Do these in order:
- Check the payment status. Open the transaction in your app. “Pending”, “unclaimed” or “not yet accepted” means you may still be able to cancel.
- Cancel if the option exists. Look for “Cancel”, “Take back” or “Cancel this payment” on the transaction.
- Screenshot everything. Capture the transaction details, the recipient’s name, username, phone or email, and the time.
- Contact the recipient politely, through the app’s request or message feature, explaining the mistake and asking them to return it.
- Contact the app’s support or your bank with the details, even if you’ve already asked the recipient.
Key takeaway: A pending payment is often cancelable. A completed payment usually is not. That’s why checking the status and canceling immediately is the single most important step.
Why mistaken payments are so hard to reverse
Peer-to-peer (P2P) payment apps are designed to work like handing over cash. Money typically moves in seconds, and the companies’ terms generally treat a payment you sent yourself as authorized, even if you meant to send it to someone else.
That matters legally. Federal rules under the Electronic Fund Transfer Act and Regulation E give strong protection against unauthorized transfers, meaning ones you didn’t make. When you made the payment yourself and typed the wrong details, most banks and apps treat it as authorized. If the bank or app itself sent the money somewhere other than where you told it to, that’s different, and you should report it as an error.
Our guide to whether Zelle is safe explains the difference between fraud and authorized scams in more depth. This is general information, not legal advice.
App-by-app steps
| App or method | Can you cancel? | If it has already completed |
|---|---|---|
| Zelle | Only if the recipient hasn’t enrolled (status pending) | Contact your bank; ask the recipient to return it |
| Venmo | Yes, “Take back” for payments to unregistered phone or email | Ask the person to pay you back or contact Venmo Support |
| Cash App | No, once completed | Request a refund from the recipient in the app |
| PayPal | Yes, if the payment is unclaimed | Contact the recipient; disputes only for goods and services |
| Apple Cash | Yes, while the payment is pending | Ask them to send it back |
| International money transfer | Within 30 minutes, if not yet picked up or deposited | Report an error within 180 days |
| Domestic bank wire | Not guaranteed | Ask your bank to send a recall request immediately |
Zelle
Zelle says you can cancel a payment only if the recipient hasn’t yet enrolled. In your bank’s app, check the payment status in your Zelle activity. If it’s pending, choose the payment and cancel it. If the recipient never enrolls, the payment expires and the money comes back to you. Once a recipient is enrolled, the money goes directly to their bank account and can’t be canceled. Zelle directs payment questions to your bank or credit union, so call the number on the back of your debit card.
Venmo
Venmo says payments to a registered account generally can’t be canceled, even if you paid the wrong person, and that opening a dispute won’t fix a mistaken payment. If you paid an unregistered phone number or email, you can usually “take back” the payment from the Me tab before it’s claimed. Unclaimed payments expire after 30 days and return to you. If you paid a stranger by mistake, Venmo asks you to contact Support with the recipient’s username, the amount, the date and the details of the person you meant to pay.
Cash App
Cash App says it can’t cancel or refund a payment once it’s completed. Open the payment in your Activity, choose to report an issue, and follow the prompts to request the money back from the recipient. If they accept, the money returns to your balance. If they don’t respond, you may not be able to recover it.
PayPal
PayPal says you can cancel a payment that’s still unclaimed from your Activity. If it’s completed, contact the recipient to request a refund, including through the chat option on the transaction. Disputes through the Resolution Center are available only for payments sent as Goods and Services, not Friends and Family.
Apple Cash
Apple says you can cancel an Apple Cash payment while its status is pending by opening Wallet, tapping your Apple Cash card and selecting the transaction. If the recipient doesn’t accept within 7 days, the money returns automatically. Completed payments can’t be canceled, so ask the recipient to send it back.

Bank wires and international transfers
International money transfers sent by consumers through banks or money transfer companies are covered by the federal remittance transfer rule. The CFPB says providers must honor a cancellation request made within 30 minutes of payment, as long as the money hasn’t been picked up or deposited, and must refund the full amount including fees within 3 business days. You have 180 days to report an error. If you gave the wrong account or routing number, the provider may not have to refund you, but it must make reasonable efforts to recover the funds. Read more in our guide on how to send money internationally.
Domestic wires are designed to be final. Your bank can send a recall request to the receiving bank, but the receiving bank usually needs the account holder’s permission to return the money. Call immediately and ask specifically for a “wire recall”.
ACH transfers and bill pay may have a short window to stop or reverse before they settle. Call your bank the same day.
If the recipient won’t give it back
Most people return money sent by mistake when asked. If they don’t:
- Keep asking in writing, through the app, and save every message.
- Escalate with the company or bank. Ask whether they can contact the recipient or restrict the funds. They may not be able to, but asking costs nothing.
- Consider a demand letter or small claims court for larger amounts. Keeping money you know was sent by mistake can create legal liability in many states, but rules vary. Talk to a lawyer or your local small claims court clerk about your options. This is not legal advice.
- File a complaint with the CFPB if you believe your bank or app didn’t handle your error report properly.
Watch out: the “accidental payment” scam
Scammers flip this situation around. You get a payment from a stranger, followed by a polite message: “Sorry, I sent that by mistake, can you send it back?” The payment may have been made with a stolen card or account. You send the money back from your own balance, the original payment gets reversed as fraud, and you’re out the money.
Venmo’s help center, for example, tells people who receive a payment from a stranger to contact Support rather than sending it back themselves. If a stranger sends you money:
- Don’t send it back yourself.
- Contact the app’s support and let them reverse it.
- Don’t click links in follow-up messages.

Where to start: how to stop it happening again
- Check the name and photo before you hit send. Most apps show the recipient’s name or profile picture.
- Send $1 first to a new recipient and confirm they got it.
- Save regular recipients as contacts or favorites instead of typing numbers.
- Read the confirmation screen slowly, especially phone numbers and email addresses.
- Lower your P2P limits so a mistake can’t be huge. Our banking app security settings guide explains how.
- Use Goods and Services or a credit card when you pay for something from someone you don’t know.
Conclusion
Sending money to the wrong person is fixable more often than it feels in the moment, but only if you move fast. Cancel anything still pending, ask the recipient directly and politely, and contact the app or your bank with clear records. Know that completed P2P payments are usually final, which makes the 5-second habit of checking the name before you send the best protection there is.

Frequently asked questions
Can I get my money back if I sent it to the wrong person?
Often, yes, but it depends on timing and the recipient. If the payment is still pending or unclaimed, you can usually cancel it in the app. If it has completed, the app or bank generally can't reverse it on its own, so you'll need the recipient to send it back. Contact them and the company right away.
Will my bank refund money I sent to the wrong person on Zelle?
Usually not automatically. Zelle payments to an enrolled recipient go straight to their bank account and can't be canceled, and banks typically treat payments you sent yourself as authorized. Your bank may still contact the recipient's bank and try to help. If your bank made the error itself, report it as an error.
How do I cancel a Venmo payment sent to the wrong person?
You can only cancel a Venmo payment sent to an unregistered phone number or email that hasn't been claimed. Use "Take back" on the transaction in the Me tab. If the person has a Venmo account, the payment can't be canceled, so ask them to pay you back or contact Venmo Support with the details.
Can Cash App reverse a payment sent to the wrong person?
No. Cash App says it can't cancel or refund a completed payment. You can request a refund from the recipient by reporting an issue on the transaction. If they accept, the money returns to your balance. If they ignore the request, recovery may not be possible, though contacting Cash App support is still worthwhile.
Is it illegal to keep money sent to you by mistake?
In many cases, keeping money you know was sent to you by mistake can expose you to civil liability, and in some situations other legal consequences, but the rules vary by state and circumstance. If you receive a mistaken payment, the safest step is to contact the app or bank rather than sending it back yourself. This is not legal advice.
Can I cancel a wire transfer sent to the wrong account?
For international money transfers covered by federal rules, you can cancel within 30 minutes if the money hasn't been picked up or deposited. Domestic wires are generally final, but your bank can send a recall request to the receiving bank. Call your bank immediately, because the chance of recovery drops quickly.
What should I do if a stranger sent me money by mistake?
Don't send it back yourself. It could be a scam where the original payment was made with stolen funds and later reversed, leaving you out of pocket. Contact the app's support or your bank and let them handle the return through the original payment.
