What is Platform Engineering?

Quick answer

The practice of building an internal developer platform that gives software teams self-service tools to build, deploy, and run applications.

Platform Engineering, explained

As cloud-native systems grew more complex, many developers found themselves configuring Kubernetes, writing infrastructure code, and wiring up monitoring alongside their product work. Platform engineering addresses this by having a dedicated team build a curated, self-service layer, often called an internal developer platform, that makes the recommended way to ship software also the easiest.

A typical platform offers templates for new services, standard CI/CD pipelines, one-click environments, built-in observability, and security controls, often accessed through a developer portal. Well-defined workflows within it are called golden paths. For example, a developer could create a new API service with logging, alerts, and deployment already configured in minutes. Successful platform teams treat the platform as a product, gathering feedback from developers and measuring adoption rather than mandating use.
