What is Developer Experience?

Quick answer

How easy, efficient, and pleasant it is for software developers to do their work with a given set of tools, processes, and platforms.

Developer Experience, explained

Developer experience, often shortened to DevEx or DX, covers everything that affects a developer's day: how quickly they can set up a project, how long builds and tests take, how clear the documentation is, how easy it is to deploy, and how often they are interrupted or blocked.

For example, if a new hire needs two weeks and help from five people to run an application locally, developer experience is poor. Improving it might mean a one-command setup script, faster test suites, and a self-service platform for creating environments. Companies invest in developer experience because friction slows delivery and frustrates staff. Platform engineering teams often treat it as their main goal, measuring it through surveys and metrics such as lead time for changes.
