A website built with modern web technologies that behaves like an installable app, with features such as offline use and notifications.
The term progressive web app, or PWA, was coined in 2015 by Google engineer Alex Russell and designer Frances Berriman. A PWA runs in the browser but can be added to a phone's home screen, open in its own window, work with poor or no connectivity using a service worker, and in many cases send push notifications.
For example, a restaurant could offer a PWA for ordering that customers open from a QR code and add to their home screen, without downloading anything from an app store. PWAs cost less to build and maintain than separate iOS and Android apps, since one codebase serves every device, and updates appear instantly. Their limits include uneven support for some device features across platforms and lower visibility than listings in app stores.
