What is Software Bill of Materials?

Quick answer

A detailed list, known as an SBOM, of all the components, libraries, and versions that make up a piece of software.

Software Bill of Materials, explained

Modern software is built from many open source and third-party components. A software bill of materials records each one, along with versions, suppliers, and dependency relationships, much like an ingredients list on food packaging. Common formats include SPDX and CycloneDX.

SBOMs help organizations respond quickly when a vulnerability is found in a widely used component. When the Log4Shell flaw in the Log4j logging library was disclosed in December 2021, many companies spent weeks working out which of their systems used it. With accurate SBOMs, that question can be answered by searching an inventory. Governments, including the United States through a 2021 executive order on cybersecurity, have pushed for SBOMs in software supplied to them. An SBOM is only useful if it is kept up to date and actually checked.
