What is Managed Detection and Response?

Quick answer

An outsourced security service, known as MDR, in which a provider monitors an organization's systems around the clock and responds to threats.

Managed Detection and Response, explained

Detecting and handling attacks requires security tools plus skilled people watching alerts at all hours, which many organizations cannot staff on their own. Managed detection and response providers supply both. They typically deploy or manage endpoint detection and response software, monitor alerts from their own security operations center, investigate suspicious activity, and take containment actions such as isolating an infected laptop.

For example, if ransomware starts running on a dental practice's computer at two in the morning, an MDR analyst can isolate the machine and contact the practice before files across the network are encrypted. When choosing a provider, businesses should check what systems are covered, how quickly the provider responds, what actions it may take without approval, and how clearly it reports findings.
