What is Managed IT Services?

Quick answer

Outsourcing day-to-day IT management, such as support, security, backups, and updates, to an external provider for a regular fee.

Managed IT Services, explained

Managed IT services are delivered by managed service providers, often called MSPs. Instead of hiring a full in-house IT team or calling someone only when things break, a business pays a monthly fee for ongoing services. Typical packages include help desk support, device and network monitoring, software updates, cybersecurity tools, backups, email and Microsoft or Google account management, and advice on technology planning.

For example, a twenty-person accounting firm might use an MSP to set up new laptops, enforce multi-factor authentication, monitor for threats, and restore files when someone deletes them by mistake. Managed services give access to broad expertise at predictable cost. Businesses should check the service level agreement, response times, what counts as extra work, security practices of the provider, and how data and passwords are handed back if the contract ends.
